• Decide what to move and what not to move. Have a Garage Sale or donate items to charity.
  • Get estimates from several moving companies or truck rentals, depending on how you plan to move.
  • Plan your travel itinerary, make transportation and lodging reservations in advance. (leave a copy to a friend).
  • Transfer bank accounts.
  • Contact local credit bureau to find out if they are on the same system your new town subscribes to. If not, they will be able to transfer your credit file.
  • Request health records from your doctors, including, x-rays, vaccinations and prescriptions.
  • Obtain your children's school records for easier school transfer.
  • Draw up a floor plan of where your furniture will go in each room. This will help the movers and you.
  • Pay outstanding bills and close out local charge accounts.
  • Record expenses incurred during house-hunting trips. Save moving receipts which can be deducted from your taxes if the move is job related.
  • Cancel delivery services, newspaper, water, gas, electric and garbage pickups.
  • Check on personal items that might be at repairshops, on lay-away, safety deposit, or a neighbor's home.
  • Arrange special transport of your pets and plants.
  • Save the phone number from your former home for tying up loose ends or future correspondence.
  • Transfer insurance policies or arrange for new ones.
  • Gather all jewelry, valuables, and important documents and personally carry them with you.
  • Have your vehicle serviced before moving day.
  • Pack a basic necessities bag in case you arrive before the movers.
  • Get refunds from utility and phone services and arrange for services to start at new location.
  • Purchase moving insurance. The mover's liability for lost or damaged goods will never equal their placement cost.
  • Get an appraisal in writing for valuable antiques and artworks.
  • Check with your attorney about your Will, if you are moving across state lines.
  • Ask about professional referrals such as: doctor, builder, accountant, landscaper.
  • Notify business, family and friends of your change of address. The Post Office provides a free change of address kit. Also contact national and alumni organizations; your house of worship, mail-order catalogs and clubs, magazine subscriptions, over time-payment businesses and past employers (for w-2 tax information)
